Re-presentation Experience (RE) Descriptions

RE1 - Gay Pride
Overview: Homosexuality...once a guarded secret and now on full display in the public square. Our culture is thick with Gay Pride and Jesus' take on this issue is often debated. How does he feel about homosexuality and what did he say about being gay?

Multimedia Sources: My Story...a retelling of one woman's life with lesbianism / Clips from the movie Letters From Iwo Jima

Literary Sources: No Perfect People Allowed
and the Holy Bible

RE2 - Growing Up God
Overview: We all carry a lasting imprint left on our lives by our families and Jesus was no different. His was a life inextricably shaped by his parents and siblings...for better or worse. Through it all, he offers us the hope of a new family.

Multimedia Sources: Video flyover of Nazareth / Clips from the movies The Passion of the Christ and Antwone Fisher

Literary Sources: No Perfect People Allowed,

The Life and Teachings of Jesus Christ and the Holy Bible

RE3 - Opening Lines
Overview: All words are not created equal! Some words are benign while others are supercharged. Jesus valued the power of words and we're left to ponder why he chose a supercharged word--repent--in the opening lines of his public ministry.

Multimedia Sources: Clips from the movie The Shawshank Redemption

Literary Sources: Jesus Mean and Wild,
A Long Obedience in the Same Direction and the Holy Bible

RE4 - Who Wants to Be First
Overview: It seems that to be first within our competitive culture we're all required to possess Trump-like determination, drive and skill. On our way to becoming "the man", however, we run the risk of losing perspective...and Jesus understood this.

Multimedia Sources: Internet video clips from The Apprentice, Mother Teresa The Legacy and Together-Team Hoyt / Clips from the movies The Fellowship of the Rings and Return of the King

Literary Sources: Blue Like Jazz
and the Holy Bible

RE5 - A Blank Canvas
Overview: Are you creative? Do you like to paint, sketch or sculpt? For most of us, the creative process is foreign and miraculous. For artists, however, inspiration often plays a critical role in the creation of their works...and Jesus was no exception.

Multimedia Sources: Internet video clips from The Mystery of Picasso and The Glenn Beck Show / Clips from the DVD Indescribable / Images from the Hubble Space Telescope

Literary Sources:
The Holy Bible

RE6 - A Most Dangerous Addiction
Overview: Of all the addictions that permeate our culture, one seems universal. This addiction isn't to a drug or activity, but its effects are just as devastating. If you're addicted, take heart...Jesus offers an amazing intervention.

Multimedia Sources: Internet video clip from A Day With Self / Clips from the movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Literary Sources: Blue Like Jazz
and the Holy Bible

RE7 - That's Not Nice
Overview: Most people are quite nice. In fact, niceness is overexposed! As nice as it is to be nice, sometimes nice just doesn't cut it. Jesus was a nice enough person but often he had people saying, "That's not nice."

Multimedia Sources: Clip from the DVD Try, Try Again / Clips from the movies Titanic and The Passion of the Christ

Literary Sources: Jesus Mean and Wild
and the Holy Bible

RE8 - A Desperate Rescue
Overview: Few things are more compelling than a rescue attempt. The more desperate the circumstances, the more gripping the drama. Jesus said he came to rescue us. His words leave us to wonder what we need rescuing from!

Multimedia Sources: Internet video clips from Plane Crash - Air Florida Flight 90, Chernobyl Aerial Video and Coming to Earth / Clips from the mini-series Band of Brothers

Literary Sources: Searching for God Knows What
and the Holy Bible

RE9 - Life in the Lifeboat
Overview: Many of us routinely compare ourselves to others. Sometimes this is good, but Jesus taught that it could also be deadly. With that said, why are comparisons so easy to make and what could be deadly about the practice?

Multimedia Sources: Internet video clip from 360 with Anderson Cooper / Clips from the movies Jerry Maguire and Cinderella Man

Literary Sources: Searching for God Knows What
and the Holy Bible

RE10 - Make It Count
Overview: Jesus once said, "I am with you always...," but that doesn't seem to be true in all cases. In fact, sometimes he feels conspicuously absent...especially at times when we could use a miracle.

Multimedia Sources: An updated, dramatic re-telling of John 11

Literary Sources: No Perfect People Allowed
and the Holy Bible

RE11 - The Confessional
Overview: A well-known follower of Jesus once said that Christians are Jesus' ambassadors to the world. He went on to say that through this ambassadorship, God makes an appeal to people to come back to him. If that's the case, why are so many Christians unappealing and why does their appeal lack any appeal?
